Pens' Goalie Tomas Vokoun Cleared For Action

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - After being sidelined since the pre-season with blood clots, Penguins' goaltender Tomas Vokoun has officially been cleared for action and says it's only a matter of conditioning before he's ready to get back on the ice for a game.

With the news of Vokoun's imminent return, many are looking at the progress of Marc-Andre Fleury this year and how he'll be impacted by having competition for the starting job again.  Vokoun was ready to replace Fleury in the playoffs last year when he struggled and could be ready to do the same again this year.

Starkey and Mueller weighed in on that very topic giving their thoughts on whether or not we could see Fleury struggle with Vokoun now ready for action.

Starkey and Mueller on Tomas Vokoun

Starkey referenced a conversation he had earlier this year with head coach Dan Bylsma regarding Fleury's comfort level with no one pressing him for the starting spot.

"I asked Dan Bylsma earlier this season if he thought that [Fleury] was benefiting from not having a real threat behind him, someone who could literally take his job... he pretty much said yes as I recall, kind of talked his way around it, but basically agreed that, that could be something that was helping Fleury.  I think it changes the dynamic," said Starkey.
