Child Struck, Killed By Father's SUV In Stanton Heights

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Investigators are looking into a deadly crash along Schenley Manor Drive in Stanton Heights.

Police say a 12-year-old girl was struck and dragged by an SUV driven by her father.

She has been identified as Shamera Harris of East Liberty.

Harris had just gone on her first date. Her father was driving her, her date and some friends home.

Police say after arriving at a home on Schenley Manor Drive around 8 p.m. Sunday night, the children posed for a picture. Harris' father went to get out of the SUV, but it was not in park and started drifting.

"He thought the vehicle was in park," said Sgt. Tom Huberin. "In fact, it must have been out of gear and went -- ran over the top of the female, dragging her down the hill and then crashed into a yard."

After that, police say Shamera Harris, who was standing behind the SUV, was dragged 50 to 60 feet before being run over and killed.

The girl's father was later taken into custody on suspected DUI. He's in custody and charges are pending.

Police say the girl's mother and brother were also in the car at the time of the accident.
