Report: Pirates Shopping Outfielder Jose Tabata

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - The Pirates top prospect Gregory Polanco really impressed the team with his performance in spring training this year, to the point that they're now reportedly shopping Jose Tabata.

Pittsburgh Tribune Review Pirates beat writer Rob Biertempfel broke that news this morning and then joined Starkey and Mueller to tell us more about the Pirates thinking behind this potential move.

"This is the kind of stuff that goes on at this point in camp when other clubs start to look at their rosters and see who might fit, who might not fit, who might be DFA'ed or what not," Biertempfel said.  "This goes on a lot pretty much every spring, teams just kind of throw feelers out to each other and see if maybe there's a fit among a player who can use a change of venue or just doesn't fit on a current 25-man roster."

Polanco won't be with the team to start the year, and with Tabata and Travis Snider both possible trade candidates, Biertempfel laid out the plan for who will fill in until the top prospect is ready.

"Tabata or Travis, whichever one isn't dealt, you could have him starting in right field, and you have a lot of different options for your backup situation," Biertempfel said.  "You have Chris Dickerson who has a little bit of major league experience, Travis Ishikawa has some experience, there's the great Andrew Lambo experience. They have different ways of kind of filling that spot until they can get to Polanco time."

Biertempfel also talked with the guys about what we've seen from Edinson Volquez so far this spring and if he deserves to just be plugged into the opening day rotation.
