Storms Bringing High Winds, Downpours & Lightning To Area

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Saturday started out with beautiful, sunny skies and warm temperatures, but now some severe weather will dampen the rest of the weekend and usher in cooler temperatures to start the week.

Meteorologist Kristin Emery says tonight's the increasing cloud cover and scattered showers and thunderstorms are just the beginning.

"Behind that system, another area of stronger thunderstorm activity will affect us [Sunday]."

Emery says Sunday will be cloudy with more showers and storms.

There's also a risk for more severe weather in the afternoon and evening hours. The high will be 79.

"We're in the slight risk category for our entire viewing area. So what that means is when you wake up [Sunday] morning, cloudy skies, we'll call for a chance of a shower, but it looks like after 11 a.m. or noon that's going to be our best chance for thunderstorms to start up," Emery says. "Later in the day, in the evening, will be the timeline for possibly some stronger thunderstorms."

These storms could bring damaging winds, large hail and heavy downpours.

After that, there will be a big cool down to start the week.

"Here we go with this strong front coming through as we have some warmer stick air in place overnight tonight and [Sunday], pretty strong cold front pushing through that will not only touch off storms but look at this big cool down. Monday into Tuesday, our highs will only reach the lower 70s," Emery said.
