Apple's New Operating System May Have Bugs

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Just as a car cannot run without an engine, so also a smartphone cannot run without something called an operating system, Carnegie Mellon University professor Anind Dey told KDKA money editor Jon Delano on Friday.

Dey: "iOS is the operating system. The intelligence that sits underneath all the applications that sit on our phones."

Delano: "And every smartphone comes with it?"

Dey: "Comes with an operating system. For Android phones, it's the Android operating system. For Apple phones, it's the iOS operating system."

And the new Apple iPhone 6 can do the things it does precisely because it has a built-in new operating system -- called iOS 8.

Dey says iOS 8 has some good features, but it's not as good as Android.

"The Android platform seems to be a step ahead of the iOS platform," noted the professor.

But Apple lovers with older iPhones or iPads or MACs can still download the iOS 8 to get Apple's latest operating system.

"I think I'm going to download it for sure. I like to be up to date on all the software," said Naomi Buettner of Oakland.

But some computer experts say, not so fast.

"I often tell people, consumers, that they should wait a little bit just to be safe before they upgrade their systems because you want to make sure all the bugs are really worked out," noted Dey.

Consumers have heard the complaints.

"I've heard that it took up a lot of space. Like I heard a lot of people had to delete a lot of things," added Buettner.

Those bugs can include some slow-downs in your older phones and iPads, and the need to delete content before downloading the new operating system.

Apple has already removed its health kit app on the iOS 8.

"They announced that that was going to be delayed until the end of the month at least," said Dey.

But others say they've downloaded the iOS8 with few problems.

"A few of my friends have already downloaded it and it seems, okay, minimal bugs and things like that. Who knows? There's always stuff popping up," noted Dante DiMatteo of Monroeville.
