Car Break-In Leads To Larger Credit Card Theft Scam
WESTMORELAND COUNTY(KDKA) – KDKA has done a lot of reporting on the record number of car break-ins in Westmoreland County, but recently one happened with a twist and it involved credit card fraud.
Every day, troopers get more and more calls of cars being broken into. Usually nickels and dimes are what they get, but not in one case.
"In this particular case, the person took credit card information and utilized that to purchase various items at Walmart," said State Police Tpr. Steve Limani.
State police say a duo of two white men first went to a Fayette County Walmart and charged hundreds in purchases, then hit another Walmart in Mt. Pleasant.
"The good thing is a lot of these big box store have good surveillance systems that work good with law enforcement," said Limani.
Cameras also caught the thieves get-away car – an older station wagon.
State police say some credit card thieves are buying big ticket items and shipping them overseas as part of a larger theft operation – impossible to track and cash only.
State police say they're not sure if this woman's credit card was used in some overseas merchandise scam, but it's a possibility. And while it's bad, troopers say the woman did one thing right and that's cancel the credit cards as soon as she saw they were stolen
