Officer Honored For His Commitment To The Community

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – During Zone 5 Day in the community, a plaque was presented to Cmdr. Timothy O'Connor.
It was the community's way of thanking O'Connor for supporting efforts to bring the May 2013 murder of 15-month-old Marcus White to the community's attention.

"Today is 508 days that baby Marcus has been killed and Cmdr. O'Connor has been with us with no hesitation," said Larry Davis with the Coalition for Father and Families.

Davis says O'Connor has attended almost all of the 14 rallies they've had for the toddler.

"He's dedicated," David said. "He's a person that wants to see the community heal and we need to work with him on that."

"He's not here to do anything else but his job," said Shannon Williams with Cease Fire. "He cares about his communities just as much as he cares about his officers."

O'Connor admits the community has had issues with Zone 5 and Pittsburgh Police. But he says both sides need to work together.

"We have to try to work harder and harder to work in conjunction with the community and find things that unite us, rather than divide us," O'Connor said. "We all stand together opposing violent crime that has afflicted too many neighbors of our city, not just in Zone 5."

New Police Chief Cameron McLay is impressed with his Zone 5 commander.

"The powerful thing about the way that he's doing it, he's doing it from the heart," said McLay. "He's developing relationships and he cares and he's passionate. At the end of the day, I need an entore department that cares as much as Tim O'Connor does."
