Pittsburgh Firefighters Provide Coats To Children In Need

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – More 1,000 children will get new coats this winter, thanks to Pittsburgh firefighters.

Coats for Kids offers winter coats to elementary school children in impoverished areas.

This year, Pittsburgh firefighters say they're able to provide 1,700 coats for children at about a dozen local schools.

Saturday dozens of volunteers were in Hazelwood handing out coats.

"It's great," said John Gardell, President of Pittsburgh Firefighters Local No.1. "We have about 75 volunteers that are all phenomenal. They come out on a Saturday, spend four hours with us, helping us hand the coats out."

Firefighters worked with the organization Operation Warm, based near Philadelphia, to get the coats.

Coats for Kids has handed out over 1 million coats nationally.

Local organization Rainbow Kitchen was also hosting a coat drive in Homestead Saturday.

Community members were invited to pick out gently-used coats and winter accessories that had been donated.
