Pregnant Woman Dies After Being Hit By Car On North Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An 88-year-old man was attempting to park his minivan in the parking lot of a Rite Aid pharmacy Wednesday afternoon on Pittsburgh's North Side when he struck and killed a pregnant woman.
The accident happened just after 3:45 p.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as 30-year-old Jodie Guthrie of Pittsburgh. She was eight months pregnant.
Guthrie's premature baby was delivered by emergency C-section, and is listed critical but stable condition at UPMC Children's Hospital.
Relatives identified the driver as Allan Massie of the North Side.
His granddaughter, Candy Thompson, told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "I can't imagine what her family is going through right now. My grandfather has Alzheimer's, and I don't think he'll remember what happened today."
Police questioned Massie after the accident.
Police say he was in the minivan with his wife, and his foot may have hit the gas pedal rather than the break, jumped a curb and pinned Guthrie against the pharmacy wall.
"Apparently, what it looks like at this point that we've been able to determine is, an elderly driver was pulling into the parking space of the Rite Aid. The female appeared to be sitting on the ground with her back against the wall. She's approximately eight-and-a-half months pregnant," said Pittsburgh Police Commander RaShall Brackney. "The driver may have hit the gas instead of hitting the brake."
She was sitting on the sidewalk next to the pharmacy at the time.
Police still don't know why she was sitting there.
The investigation continues.
