Warrant Issued For Man Accused Of Violently Shaking Girlfriend's Baby
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are looking for a man accused of shaking his girlfriend's baby so severely it was in the ICU at Children's Hospital and later died.
"The light that was in her eyes, that was in her mother's, is never going to be there again," said the baby's aunt, who did not want to be identified. "Two lives were lost."
The mother said she had just put the baby down for a nap when she heard her screaming.
Police say Sunday, the mother put her 5-and-a-half-month-old daughter Cami down for a nap and left the baby with her boyfriend, Kenneth Reeves.
The woman then went downstairs to make some food for her father and sister's children, who were all over at the house, when they heard the baby scream.
The mother ran upstairs and found the baby awake and crying. When asked what happened, police say Reeves told her he didn't know.
The baby eventually lost consciousness and stopped breathing. The mother then called 911 while she and her brother performed CPR.
Police say Reeves has a previous conviction of child endangerment and aggravated assault.
"May God have mercy on your soul," said the baby's aunt.
The baby was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with abusive head trauma and swelling of the brain.
Doctors said the baby hadn't shown an activity since Sunday.
"My sister decided to keep her on life support to donate her organs to other children in the hospital," said the aunt.
The mother also told police that on two other occasions, the baby was crying loudly, uncontrollably, for unknown reasons, while in the care of Reeves.
The mother of the child involved in the first case against Reeves spoke to KDKA and also did not want to be identified.
She said she is grief-stricken by the news of Cami's death. Her child, who was 3 years old at the time, has since recovered.
The family is hoping Reeves will be brought to justice.
"If anybody sees him, please call police," said the aunt. "Please, we just want closure."
