PRC: 3 Easy Ways To "Recycle Your Holiday"

By the Pennsylvania Resources Council

Holiday memories should last forever, but the many materials used to celebrate the season should find new purposes through recycling. The Pennsylvania Resources Council offers three ways to conveniently "recycle your holiday."

For more information about how to reduce, reuse and recycle during the holiday season – and every day of the year – visit the Pennsylvania Resources Council website at www.prc.org.

1) RECYCLE POLYSTYRENE PACKAGING MATERIAL – FREE

Unwrap your gifts and collect the hard, white molded polystyrene packaging material for recycling. Thanks to a partnership with NOVA Chemicals, PRC has launched a year-round program to collect and recycle expandable polystyrene (EPS). Drop off EPS at the following locations: Appliance Warehouse, 523 Bingham Street, South Side; Bradys Run Recycling Center in Brighton Township; and NOVA Chemicals site in Monaca.

2) RECYCLE ELECTRONICS – FREE

If you receive a new TV or computer this holiday season, remember that many of these electronics are not accepted by your garbage service and they must be recycled. PRC's partner eLoop accepts most electronics at its facility in Plum Industrial Park year round. Best Buy stores may also be an option, but call the store first to confirm.

3) RECYCLE THE CHRISTMAS TREE – FREE

Recycle your Christmas tree and give it new life as wood chips or compost! Many municipalities hold tree-cycling collections in January, so check with your municipality to find out when and where. Allegheny County will collect trees for recycling at county parks from Dec. 26 through Jan. 17. Please make sure to remove all lights, decorations, tinsel and stands prior to drop off regardless of where you recycle your tree.
