High School Basketball Player Scores 2,000th Point

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local high school basketball player reached a pretty impressive milestone Thursday night.

Sammie Weiss is a senior who plays on the McGuffey High School girls' basketball team.

During a game against Quaker Valley, she scored the two-thousandth point of her high school career, joining an elite club.

"It means a lot," said Weiss. "I'm honored to be in the 2000 point club!"

She admits it was on her mind during the game. Her friends and family sat waiting with a big 2000 sign and a chocolate basketball made by Sarris Candies.

Her coach, Amanda Burchett, says she's proud of the player Weiss is, but also the person she is. "She's actually one of the most humble people you'll ever meet," said Burchett. "On the court she doesn't really vocalize a lot of things. She just goes out there and gets the job done."

Thursday night she got the job done toward the end of the game. She needed to score 15 points to reach 2000. After scoring 14, she didn't seem to have an opportunity to shoot and then she missed.

Finally, it happened. The crowd jumped to their feet and there were hugs, as the announcer explained the milestone she just reached.

Weiss plans on attending Cal U in the fall, where she will of course play basketball.
