Convicted Child Molester Arrested At Science Center After Claiming To Be Boy's Grandfather

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A convicted child molester was arrested Wednesday after police say he snuck into the Carnegie Science Center and approached a child, offered him candy and claimed to be his grandparent.

Sherwood Stevenson, 76, of Clinton, is facing charges of corruption of minor, unlawful contact with a minor, false identification to law enforcement authorities and theft of services.

Police say Stevenson was arrested around 11 a.m. after sneaking into the Science Center without paying the admission fee, following a group of students around while they were on a field trip, and then offering candy to a 12-year-old boy.

During a planetarium show, police said Stevenson sat beside the boy and asked him: "Do you want to go to the movies sometime?"

According to police, Stevenson told the boy's teacher that he was the student's grandfather, which the boy denied.

The teacher from the Pittsburgh Gifted Center became suspicious, and contacted security who then notified Pittsburgh Police.

Authorities say Stevenson repeatedly lied to Pittsburgh Police, telling them his name was Kim Johnson.

Stevenson pleaded guilty in 2011 to molesting a 6-year-old boy in a hot tub on a cruise ship. He served nearly five years in jail, and was out on probation.
