6 Displaced, 1 Home Destroyed In 3-Alarm Larimer Fire

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Officials are trying to figure out what started a fire that badly damaged two homes in Pittsburgh's Larimer neighborhood early this morning.

The fire started in one house on Meadow Street and quickly spread to another around 1:30 a.m.

Six people have been displaced, but more was lost than just their homes.

"A music studio where they do music and pay for studio time," Renita Booker, a neighbor, said.

It took crews hours to knock down the three-alarm fire. The street was closed until about 5:30 a.m. until the city could send salt trucks to deal with all the ice created by the freezing water run-off.

One home was destroyed, and while the damage to the second home appears to have been limited to the upper stories, the people who lived there won't be able to stay after the fire.

"There's people who live there. I don't know if they live at the top, but they definitely do get music there," Booker said.

The music studio was available to up-and-coming performers and Booker said a couple of locals have used it many times.

Now that the homes have burned, it may mean some music careers will be put on hold too.

"It means they need to put a carwash together and come up with another studio. There should be some insurance on some of the equipment, but maybe not," Booker said.

Four people living in the house where the fire started were able to get out safely on their own.  Two people in the second house involved were able to escape the fire with their dog.

Paramedics treated one woman for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The Red Cross has stepped in to assist those who lost everything in the fire.
