Colter Scores 1000th Career Point In Duquesne Win Over Dayton
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) — Junior guard Derrick Colter scored his 1,000th career point and led Duquesne to a 83-73 win over Dayton with 25 points.
"It was a good win, I just wanted to win I don't really care about 1,000 points right now, I just wanted to win with my teammates," Colter said.
Dayton (20-6, 10-4 A10) got off to a quick start at Consol Energy Center and was leading Duquesne 7-0 early in the first half. But Duquesne (9-16, 4-10 A10) fought back and secured a 21-20 lead after a 9-0 run over the Flyers with 11:08 left in the first half.
Dayton held a 42-41 lead over the Dukes at half time, but the Dukes proved to be too much for the Flyers in the second half.
Colter nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the arc early in the second half which put him past his 1,000th career point mark and it also put Duquesne up 48-44 with 18:06 left to play. Dayton trailed the Dukes the remainder of the game from that point on and finished with a 39.7 FG percentage.
Duquesne shot 52.5 percent from the field as a team and five of the Dukes finished in double figures. In addition to Colter's 25 points, Micah Mason finished with 17, Dominique McKoy scored 11 and Jeremiah Jones and Desmond Ridenour both contributed 10 points.
"I think that was the best basketball game we played this season just a truly unselfish basketball game on both ends of the floor," Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry said.
Colter and Mason both played the entire 40 minutes of the game and shot a combined 8 for 9 from the free throw line in the final 5:02 of the game.
"We kind of knew we were going to be playing a lot more minutes now with less guys," Mason said. "Me and DC we just need to stay tough and continue to play hard and that's what we have to do if we want to win."
The Dukes are back in action at the A.J. Polumbo Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Saint Louis.
