PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without star defenseman Kris Letang for an undermined amount of time.

According to the Penguins, Letang suffered a concussion during the second period of Saturday 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes.

Today, Mike Johnston would not elaborate on how long the star defenseman may be out. What is certain, is that he will not play tonight against San Jose.

Letang was injured after falling awkwardly into the boards after a hit by Shane Doan. Letang had flipped the puck up ice, when Doan finished his check.

Letang attempted to avoid the hit, but landed in a seated position and smacked the back of his head against the boards.

He remained on the ice for several minutes before being helped to the locker room.

Letang was taken to the hospital and has since been released.

The Penguins’ defense corps is already without Christian Ehrhoff, who is out with an upper-body injury. Not to mention Olli Maatta, who is out for the season.

Salary cap restrictions do not allow for the Penguins to call up a replacement for tonight’s game.

As a result, the Penguins will only dress five defensemen against the Sharks.
