Thieves Pose As Allegheny Co. Sheriff Officials In New Scam

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – There's another scam alert.

Thieves are now calling around, pretending to be from the local sheriff's office.

They're looking for your personal information, but there's one thing about their scheme that should be a dead giveaway.

The call came Saturday morning and was left on voicemail.

"My name is Deputy Evans," the caller says. "I'm with the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department. If you could please return my call, 412-627-2583. Again, my number is 412-627-2583."

That number is a cell number and did not come from an Allegheny County exchange as an official call from the sheriff's would.

But when KDKA called it Monday morning, it was already out of service.

We've learned that some of those who did either answer the phone, or speak with the caller over the weekend, were led to believe they owed money and it had to be paid immediately.

Some actually paid money and others waited until they could reach someone from the sheriff's office and learned of the scam.

There's no word yet on how many others responded to the call or how much may have been asked for.

The sheriff's office only says at this point they are still investigating the case.
