Seven Springs Hosting Superpark Snowboarding Event

SEVEN SPRINGS (KDKA) -- They fly through the air with the greatest of ease. Snowboarding athletes don't need a trapeze.

For the first time ever, Snowboarder Magazine is hosting its annual Superpark event in the east - at Seven Springs resort.

"It happens at the end of the year, each season," says Patrick Bridges, the magazine's creative director. "We bring in the best park riders, the best builders in the world, and we build a park unlike anything that's seen all year, or ever seen before."

Seven Springs is hosting a couple hundred of the best snowboarders in the world, including six Olympians.

"What they built is geared toward creativity," says Colorado snowboarder Taylor Gold. "They want to see the park builders being creative, and they want to see the riders using those creative features in a creative way."

But how can Pennsylvania slopes match up with the towering peaks of the west?

"It's the best Superpark I've ever seen," west coast snowboarder Scotty Vine responds.

But he's a bit mystified by Pennsylvania weather.

"Out here you can have sun, the fog roll in, and yesterday we saw clouds of steam come right off the snow," he said. "Then, five minutes later, it can be the complete polar opposite of what it was five minutes ago."

Bare slopes in the west give eastern fans a glimpse of the best there are. Red Gerard, 14, of Colorado, says he started snowboarding at his former home, near Cleveland.

"My goals in snowboarding are just to have as much fun as I can, and see where it takes me," he says. "I get to travel as much as I can, and take every opportunity that I get."

Though Red says he's lost his Cleveland ties, he confesses, "My dad is a complete Cleveland Browns fan. Like, it's insane. But no, I don't really watch football."

Given the options, he's made a good choice.
