"48 Hours" Explores Local Unsolved Murder

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The murder of a 23-year-old local woman was unsolved for 34 years, even though police had five suspects.

Saturday's episode of "48 Hours" will find out why.

Former Bridgewater councilman Gregory Hopkins was convicted last year for the 1979 strangulation of his girlfriend, Janet Walsh.

While the show credits police for preserving DNA evidence that solved the case, it questions why there were at least five potential suspects.

"The mystery is out there, the prosecutors and the detectives in this case are convinced they have the right man," says "48 Hours" correspondent Peter Van Sant. "But that man who's been convicted of murder says 'you've got the wrong guy' and that he's innocent and has an alibi."

You can watch Van Sant's investigation of the Walsh murder case on KDKA at 10 p.m.
