PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Iggy Azalea’s replacement has been announced for this weekend’s Pittsburgh Pride in the Street event in Downtown Pittsburgh.
The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh says Nick Jonas will headline this year’s festivities.
Jonas replaces Azalea who canceled her appearance after several LGBT groups threatened to boycott the event due to offensive remarks she had made in the past.
According to the Delta Foundation, Jonas contacted the group himself after learning of Azalea’s last-minute cancellation.
“He had seen in the news media and called and said, ‘I wanna come and help Pittsburgh have a really great Pittsburgh Pride celebration,'” Christine Bryan, of the Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh, said. “Nick has obviously worked with the LGBT community his entire life. He’s been on Broadway, done tons of appearances. He wanted to come and do this.”
Jonas rose to fame while in a band with his brothers, the Jonas Brothers. He has also been on Broadway and is a multi-platinum recording artist.
Jonas says in a press release: “When I heard about the difficult position Pittsburgh Pride was in just days before their event, I knew I had to find a way to help. I’m excited to do what I can to support the LGBT community in Pittsburgh, and I look forward to seeing you this Saturday as we celebrate together.”
Meanwhile, reaction to the Nick Jonas announcement has been mixed.
“I think it’s sad what happened with Iggy. She said things in the past. I feel it’s maybe not fair to hold that against her if she’s changed her attitude about it,” Charlie Dominick of the North Side said.
“We have a straight white guy replacing her. We can do better,” Andrew Twigg of Lawrenceville said.
“I think Iggy was just young immature getting fresh in the business. She’s wising up now,” Nick Jonas fan Danielle Agrate said. “I’m happy to see a Jonas brother coming. I like them. He’s still cute.”
Pittsburgh Pride in the Street will be held on Saturday, June 13 from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Liberty Avenue from 9th to 10th Streets will be shut down for the celebration.
Other performers include: DJ Digital Dave, DJ Strobe, Thea Trix, Chance Encounters, and Steel Pan Pittsburgh.
