NewsRadio 1020 KDKA Editorial: Independence Day weekend
It's the Independence Day weekend!
While it's a time for cookouts and fireworks –
It's also time to remember what we're celebrating.
On July 4th, 1776 –
The Continental Congress –
Adopted the final language of The Declaration of Independence.
The document included these words:
We hold these truths to be self-evident –
That all men are created equal –
That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights –
That among these are Life –
Liberty –
And the pursuit of Happiness.
Those words marked the beginning of a new nation.
They shaped our past –
And should guide our future.
While the Declaration of Independence talks about "rights" –
It also implies responsibility.
That includes celebrating responsibly.
Don't drink and drive.
Don't speed.
Keep yourself – and others – safe –
So you can celebrate again next year.
