Family Stuck In Puerto Rico After Son Suffers Brain Bleed

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The family of a little boy who got sick while on vacation in Puerto Rico needs help to make it back to the US.

Na'Kai Phillips, 5, has a form of cerebral palsy and has a shunt in his head.

He suffered a brain bleed on vacation and had emergency surgery in San Juan.

Now, his family is stuck there, unable to come up with the $20 to $30,000 for a medical plane to fly him home for further treatment.

"This experience is just horrible for me," said Na'Kai's mother Shaquala. "We came to Puerto Rico for a vacation, we share a vacation, this was supposed to be a birthday to remember. It's turned into a nightmare."

Doctors say Na'Kai's condition is very serious, he probably couldn't even fly in a medical plane as it stands.

And the hospital in Puerto Rico has some difficult conditions.

"The hospital doesn't supply anything as far as blankets, covers, they don't supply washcloths," said Shaquala. "They don't supply soap, they don't supply anything. I had to improvise this morning. My son needed to wash up, he needed a basin to wash."

Jamie's Dream Team is raising money for the family.

There's also a GoFundMe page for Na'Kai. If you'd like to donate, visit the family's GoFundMe page at: http://www.gofundme.com/helpnakai
