McCutchen, Other Pirates Help Free PNC Park Grounds Crew Member Swallowed By Tarp

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen made quite a play - during a rain delay.

The grounds crew at PNC Park was trying to put the tarp on the infield Tuesday night when the game between Pittsburgh and San Diego was delayed by bad weather in the third inning.

Heavy winds and rain caused the tarp to start swelling, and a member of the grounds crew -- Filed Maintenence Supervisor Matt Gerhardt -- was swallowed up and trapped underneath.

McCutchen was watching from in front of the Pirates' dugout. The Pittsburgh All-Star saw the man get caught and quickly ran onto the field to help pull the tarp off him.

Pirates outfielders Sean Rodriguez and Gregory Polanco also lent helping hands to get Gerhardt to safety.

Some members of the bullpen also came running out onto the field to help hold down the heavy tarp while grounds crew members got it under control during the gusty winds and rain.

Greg Brown, the voice of the Pirates, joined The KDKA Morning News with Larry Richert and John Shumway and talked about witnessing the Bucs players giving the grounds crew a hand.

Brown says up close it, "was a wild scene and I'm sure frightening for a moment," because, "the tarp is heavy on its own but when you have to find the wind as an additional element it makes it [extra] tough."
