1 Sister Killed In Fire, Other One Escapes Jumping Out Window

ETNA (KDKA) – One woman was killed and another escaped by jumping out of a second-story window after their house went up in flames late Saturday night.

It happened at the home on Parker Street in Etna around 10:30 p.m.

Two sisters lived in the house, 33-year-old Christie Claypool and 31-year-old Stephanie Krulia.

Christie was able to escape by jumping out of a second-story window.

"She jumped out the window at the back of the house and ran around screaming, 'My sister is in there, my sister is in there,'" said the sisters' mother Candy Newcamp.

Sadly, Stephanie didn't make it out of the house and died of smoke inhalation.

"Stephanie calls me, 'Mommy the house is on fire, we can't get out,'" said Candy. "I said, 'Dear God, call 911.'"

Their mother says they were in a bedroom watching television when the fire started downstairs. She believes Stephanie tried to rescue her pets, while Christie escaped thinking her sister was behind her.

Firefighters say the fire was too dangerous for a rescue attempt.

"It took us about five or six minutes before we were able to get anybody into the house, just enough time to get water on the fire to make conditions tenable and even then it was very dangerous and hot," said Etna Fire Chief Greg Porter. "And unfortunately by the time they got to her, she had succumbed to her injuries."

Firefighters discovered Stephanie's body on the second floor.

"I loved her dearly," said Candy. "Everybody that met her loved her, her father loved her, her family did. She was just a great all-around kid."

"That's what's going to be hard for me, being without her," said their father.

Candy says her daughter Christie was treated for minor injuries at the hospital. She had dinner with her daughters Saturday night.

"When my daughters left to go home, both gave me a hug and a kiss, 'I love you mom, see you tomorrow,' and I'm glad they did," she said.
