Man Arrested After Leading Police On Chase, Crashing Into Another Car

NORTH SIDE (KDKA) - A man is behind bars facing a long list of charges for his involvement in a police chase.

It started when officers noticed some suspicious behavior along Henderson Street, outside of Sandusky Court.

Officers noticed Nicholas Simon parked in an area known for drug activity. When he pulled away, an officer noticed he failed to signal for a left turn. When the officer caught up with him on Fountain Street, Simon was driving away at a high rate of speed.

Police say Simon continued at a high rate of speed down Compromise Street to Dunloe Street and then onto James Street. The officer decided to disengage the chase, since Simon was traveling at such a high rate of speed.

At the intersection of James and Hemlock Streets, police say Simon struck a car. The victim, Patricia Lynch, says she was driving when she observed another car come around the corner at a high rate of speed.

Lynch says Simon's vehicle came into her lane and struck her driver's side bumper and wheel. Lynch was taken to Allegheny General Hospital for neck pain. Her car was towed away with moderate damage.

Eventually, officers spotted Simon's car backed into some high weeds in a gravel lot at the intersection of Viola and Milroy Streets in the city's Perry North neighborhood. Officers noticed Simon walking across the street and up a set of stairs. At that time, Simon took off running.

Officers chased Simon through a thick, wooded area and down a hillside about 100 yards steep. Once they caught up to him, Simon kept resisting arrest. He was eventually arrested and taken to Allegheny General Hospital to be examined. He was then transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

One neighbor in the Perry Hilltop area where Simon was caught said things have gone downhill recently in the neighborhood regarding drug deals.

"I've been going to the community meetings trying to see what we can do to see if there's any changes. If not, I'd like to just get out," she said.

Simon faces charges of fleeing and eluding, recklessly endangering others, resisting arrest and more than 20 traffic violations. They found a glass crack pipe in Simon's pants.
