Seven Springs Reports First Snowflakes Of Season, Freeze Warning Issued

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The first snowflakes of the season have been spotted, and the cool temperatures have prompted a Freeze Warning for parts of the area.

Officials at Seven Springs say a light snow began to fall at the resort today around 9 a.m., and they expect it to continue intermittently throughout the day and into the evening.

KDKA Meteorologist Kristin Emery says temperatures will stay well below normal today with a high of just 48 degrees and a chance of showers. A few snowflakes are also possible to the north and east.

"Just know that the growing season will be over," says Emery. "Plants, any tender vegetation, cover it or bring it in as of tonight."

Tonight we can expect partly cloudy and cold conditions.

"Big ridge of high pressure off to our west, cold front came through, you would think we would have bright, sunny skies, but there's just enough of a cold air flow aloft that we're getting cloud cover streaming in with a little bit of lake effect activity that will keep us in clouds mixing with sun most of the weekend," says Emery.

The Freeze Warning will be in effect from midnight through 10 a.m. Sunday for Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

In West Virginia, Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Monongalia and Ohio counties are also under the warning.

The lows Sunday morning are expected to be in just the upper 20s to lower 30s.

If you don't like this cooler weather, there is some good news, it looks like temperatures will warm back up early in the week.

"A little potential for sunshine [Sunday], but as high pressure moves off to the east, we start to get a return flow winds shift out of the southwest late [Sunday] into Monday, that means we warm back up to more normal temperatures," said Emery.

Monday is looking mostly sunny and milder with a high of 57.
