New Brewery Offering Unique Opportunity That Could Get You "Free Beer For Life"

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- How does "Free Beer for Life" sound? Or at least "Free Beer for a Year"?

It's the unique offer from a soon-to-open brewery on Pittsburgh's North Side.

Of course, it's not entirely free. (Nothing is.) But it's a clever idea to raise money.

The deal is that you make an investment in this start-up brewery and then drink down dividends for years to come.

"So this was originally a firehouse. It was built in 1877," Jake Bier is explaining the place where he hopes to realize his dream.

He and his business partner want to turn a historic firehouse in the Mexican War Streets section of the North Side into a brewery: The War Streets Brewery.

He didn't just hop onto the craft beer craze. Beer-making started for him in college.

"I needed a cheaper way to get beer, so I started making it myself," said Bier. "Just kind of caught on to it, became a hobby, and about three years ago, I decided I wanted to try to open a brewery."

He already has some equipment, but needs to buy more, and that's where the Indigogo crowdfunding comes in.

"A thousand dollar investment gets you free beer for life at the pub," said Bier.

There is a limit of three beers a day or one filled growler.

For a $750 investment, you can get free beer for a year! He also has less expensive options with lesser perks.

Concerning the "Beer for Life" offer, Bier says: "If you do the math, you can repay your investment within 50 days if you come to the brewery every day."

Bier and his partner still have some work to do.

They need to get a federal permit and a state license before they can open or sell any beer.

But hope to have that in place to be able to open this spring.
