Storm System To Bring Rain, Snow, Cooler Temperatures

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A storm system that's bringing rain, gusty winds, cooler temperatures and snow started moving into the area Wednesday afternoon.

There have been no weather alerts for the Pittsburgh area or the surrounding region, but rain began falling Downtown just after 3 p.m. and there have been reports of some flash flooding.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas north – like Erie and Crawford County.

KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla says the rain from late Tuesday night will move east overnight.

"Our third round of rain showers, shifting off now to the east and northeast," said Verszyla. "We're going to get into another lull in the activity as we approach the midnight hour and for a good chunk of the overnight period."

During the day Thursday, Verszyla says temperatures will dip into the mid-30s in the afternoon hours. Conditions will be windy with rain and snow showers possible.

"[Thursday] will break down like this," Verszyla said. "We'll start off the morning with temperatures in the upper-30s, there still could be a rain or snow shower in the area and roadways will just be wet really throughout the day [Thursday] as temperatures will be above freezing all day long despite the snow showers coming down. It will be windy as well, and anything that does accumulate, maybe a slushy half an inch to an inch would likely do so just on grassy areas."

The heavy rains Wednesday night prompted officials to close Washington Boulevard in the city's East End in both directions, according to Mayor Bill Peduto. The water eventually receded and the road was reopened.

There was also a landslide in the community of Thornburg. Crafton Police shut down Cornell Road between Stuebenville Pike and Yale Road, so that crews could remove debris and powerlines from the roadway.

They say the road will be closed until morning.

The good news is that after brisk and chilly conditions on Friday, it will be turning milder again just in time for the weekend.
