Church Services Focus On Deadly Wilkinsburg Shooting

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- It was a tragedy that rocked the foundation of a community. Six people were shot and killed including a pregnant woman, three others were wounded during a backyard cookout in Wilkinsburg on Wednesday.

The Christian Church of Wilkinsburg was one of many places of worship offering strength and guidance to a community in mourning.

"Lord, even though we come this morning and some are struggling lord, god with the recent tragedy to find peace and joy," said Associate Pastor Cecilia Sims.

Songs of joy and praise at Covenant Church were followed by thoughts of the victims and their families.

"We ask you today father to pour your compassion grace and love on this family," said Pastor Joey Garlington. "Lord we pray for your heart of compassion to be with them today as they mourn the loss of their loved ones."

Meanwhile the memorial continues to grow on the front porch of the home on Franklin Avenue. Melicia Bey and her grandchildren came to the home to pay respects to the victims. She hopes Wilkinsburg will become a safer community for the sake of the children.

"Stop the violence, put the guns down, pick up a book, get educated. Parents need to do their jobs in raising their families," said Bey.
