Over $1M In Pittsburgh Foundation Scholarship Cash Untapped

PITTSBURGH (AP/KDKA) - Some scholarship providers in western Pennsylvania say they're having trouble giving away free money.

Officials with the National Scholarship Providers Association tell The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that community foundations that award local scholarships can find it more difficult to give out money than larger, national scholarships.

The newspaper reports that The Pittsburgh Foundation awarded about $2.2 million last year out of a total of about $3.6 million.

The foundation says outdated or overly specific scholarship requirements can hinder the efforts of scholarship providers.

The group says many guidance counselors don't have time to properly inform students about scholarship opportunities, and some students aren't confident they'll win the scholarships. Others are unmotivated to apply.

The foundation hopes to improve its search function to enable students to find scholarships.

The Pittsburgh Foundation has a list of scholarships on its website. Though some deadlines have already passed, most are still accepting applications.
