Local Army Veteran Honored With New Home

WHITE OAK (KDKA) -- Army Staff Sergeant Michelle Satterfield was honored by the Steelers at a home game December 20th.  And then, the public address announcer said the unexpected.

"Thank you Michelle for your service to your country.  Here are the keys to your new home!"

For the single mom and 12-year-old son, Hunter, it was a goodbye to apartment living.

Four months later, flags are unfurled in White Oak. She's was greeted by the biggest flag of all, which was draped in front of her brand new house.

"This will be the 47th home that the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has been able to hand over to deserving veterans, all across this country," Foundation spokesman John Hodge announced.

Steelers Arthur Moats and Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army Ranger, offered support.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers are the most appreciative team in the NFL when it comes to service," Villanueva told the crowd.

"This is an amazing thing, and it just shows how powerful we can be when we all work together," Moats added.

After brief announcements, the sergeant and her son get a first look at their new home. And they love it.

"It's really nice to have something of my own," she said.  "And not only that, but something that I can have for him as he gets older. And it's mine!"

Sergeant Satterfield was selected, in large part, for humanitarian efforts that went above and beyond several deployments overseas.  It's the first Tunnel to Towers house built by students.  Mckeesport Area High School students.

"We design it, put it together, build it, and get it ready for moving," said building construction teacher Mike Locke.

"It's amazing how everybody's come together just for me," Satterfield said in wonder.
