Driver Hospitalized After Vehicle Crashes Into Center Twp. House

CENTER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – One person was injured when a car slammed into a house in Butler County Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the accident happened in the 100 block of Arthur Drive in Center Township shortly after 5 a.m.

Initial reports indicate the vehicle was traveling along Route 308, went off the road, down the hillside and hit the house.

"We believe they were traveling northbound on [Route] 308, left the road for whatever reason up around Marvelle Drive, traveled through these back yards before hitting this tree right up here and striking the building," Unionville Volunteer Fire Chief Nathan Wulff said.

Melody Cunningham was sleeping inside the home at the time. She was visiting her aunt and heard what sounded like an explosion. Initially, she thought it was caused by the furnace.

"We were sleeping and it was like a loud explosion, stuff went flying across, like I could feel stuff blowing past me and I could hear glass and stuff hitting the wall and a brick went through the closet door," Melody Cunningham said.

Emergency crews were also surprised when they got to the scene, because they were originally dispatched for a natural gas situation.

"The big thing was transitioning from thinking it was possibly a natural gas explosion, or a fire or something along those lines to it being a vehicle accident with very serious injuries," Chief Wulff said.

At one point, the car was airborne, which is how it hit the roof of the house and caused significant damage.

"The kitchen is destroyed, the whole wall almost is gone in the kitchen and the wall where the window was where I was sleeping, is gone. It's just a mess," Cunningham said.

The vehicle came to rest on its roof and the driver was transported to a local hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.

While cleanup and repairs will take some time, Cunningham is just thankful she's okay and so is her aunt.

"I was freaking out, but I was glad because God is good. He protected us. I mean, stuff is everywhere, glass was everywhere, so I am fortunate," she said.
