Teen Drowns In Butler County Quarry

BUTLER COUNTY (KDKA) -- A family is in mourning after a teenager drowned in a quarry in Butler County sometime Saturday evening.

State police say the incident happened at a pond in a private area located at 208 Shroyer Mill Rd. in Clay Township sometime between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The victim was 14-year-old Destin Badeau.

Badeau's family was having a picnic in the area Saturday. He went into the pond for one last swim of the day, but didn't return.

"He was real good kid, he loved to help," Destin's father, George Badeau, said. "He loved to help his dad. And I'm sorry he's gone."

His family said Destin was athletic. He played baseball and football and took karate.

"He was a good swimmer. He wore a life jacket," Destin's grandmother, Sue Badeau, said. "Adults were supervising, and yet this one time, he went down and just didn't come back up."

There was a frantic effort to find and then revive Destin. For 30 minutes, family and friends performed CPR on Badeau. When emergency responders arrived, they rushed him to the hospital, where he passed away.

Family described Destin as a sensitive kid who worried about world events.

"He paid attention to the news," his grandmother said. "He had serious conversations about why are all these shootings... or other things like that."

Christine D'Antonio's Report:

The straight-A student had just finished up 7th grade at South Brook. On Monday, Pittsburgh Public Schools released this statement mourning Badeau's loss:

"It is with great sadness that we report our Pittsburgh South Brook 6-8 school community is mourning the loss of Destin Badeau. The 14-year-old was the victim in a drowning incident this past Saturday.

Destin is described by school staff as a wonderful, sweet boy, who was well liked by all. He was always smiling and his smile would light up a room. Destin was a very good student and positive leader among his peers.

Our thoughts are with Destin's family during this very difficult time."

Badeau's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with final expenses: https://www.gofundme.com/2dpeczgb

After only seven hours, the family had surpassed their goal. According to the GoFundMe page, any additional funds will be donated to "a charity that helps support children who have experienced trauma."
