Man Says 4-Year-Old Son Likely Started Fire With Lighter

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) -- A New Castle man says his 4-year-old son likely started a fire at his home Saturday morning.

The fire broke out just after 10 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 200-block of West Lincoln Avenue.

According to New Castle assistant fire chief David Joseph, a man was in the laundry room on the first floor when he heard a commotion upstairs, and when he went to the second floor, it was full of smoke. The fire was burning in a bedroom, where his 3-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son were.

The father got both of the children out of the apartment. The children were uninjured, and the father suffered burns on his hand. He was treated at the scene.

Joseph says the father suspected his 4-year-old son started lit the mattress on fire with a lighter because the son "had a habit" of setting fires using a lighter.
