Burrell's Lady Bucs Belt National Anthem When Song Doesn't Play

LOWER BURRELL (KDKA) -- Fans at Burrell High School are getting a kick out of their girls soccer team.

"Oh, it's amazing. It's the greatest feeling that I have experienced so far. We are winning. We are accomplishing goals that we haven't in the past and we are just moving on," said player Leesha Wagner.

This fall, the Lady Bucs qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2007, but it is what they did before two games that raised eyebrows.

"The fact that a lot of people are kneeling nowadays for it, I feel, is very disrespectful to the anthem and I just feel like it's really important to have it played before games," said player Michela Beattie.

The lights were already on for their night game, the girls were on the field ready to play. The only problem is the National Anthem wouldn't play.

Not to worry. That's when the girls from Burrell took over.

"It just, like, happened. It didn't work and we all just started singing together," said player Morgan Weeter.

"The recording didn't work and you always feel like you can't play without the National Anthem. It's just like a tradition for all high school sports -- especially our team,"  Beattie said.

"We didn't really think it was a big deal when it happened. We were kind of like we have to sing it, it's the National Anthem. You can't just not have it, so when it happened I don't think we thought it was a big deal," said player Maggie Schwartz.

But then, it happened again.

This time, at Shady Side Academy and the cameras were rolling. They didn't have any notions about being how well they could carry a tune.

Rick Dayton: You guys are all great singers right?
Morgan Weeter: Umm, better soccer players than singers.

Yet, they just knew they had to try.

Let's just say these ladies hit the right pitch -- on the pitch.
