Penguins On Parade At Pittsburgh Zoo And PPG Aquarium

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Friday's cold and windy weather was a perfect time for a stroll, if you happen to be a penguin. The flightless birds at Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium took their first walk of the season.

Macaroni penguins, with stringy, yellow tops, surveyed the estate with Gentoo penguins, sporting white sideburns.

Penguin keeper Katy Wozniak rules the roost - or rookery, in this case. She says the birds will parade for the public each weekend at 11:30 a.m., if the weather is cold enough.

"It's something different," the penguin keeper says. "The sights. The sounds. The leaves rustling around. And especially if we do get some snow. It's something new to them, even though we've been doing this for he past five years. They really enjoy it, and so do the people."

Low 40s, windy - wonderful weather for waddling. And, of course, they're always dressed for the occasion.

The penguin is a proper bird. Fine fashion is his credo. He's always dressed in formal wear: a permanent tuxedo.

Iceburgh, the mascot who thrills crowds at PPG Paints Arena, gets a cold shoulder from smaller members of his species. It seems each bird has its own way of looking at things.

"They're very similar to humans," Wozniak says. "Kids. I have to feel like I have eyes in the back of my head. Searching for them. looking for them. As they're running around the exhibit, the older birds just kind of sit there on the rocks, moving a little bit slower. They all get alone in there."
