'Dare To Dream': Disney On Ice Skates Into Town

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- "Dare to Dream."

That's the theme when Disney On Ice skates into the spotlight at PPG Paints Arena this weekend.

Those "dream" characters include Cinderella and her nightmarish stepsisters. One of those mean sisters is actually played by a very pleasant and talented skater named Rachel Navares.

"Our show is very classic meets contemporary," she says. "So we actually open up with a New Orleans set for the Princess and The Frog. We then segue into Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. Then we go into the classic story of Cinderella."

The nationwide tour travels with forty skaters and twenty crew and staff who handle things like special effects. The show includes eight spotlights, and fourteen lights at ice level.

"One of the coolest lights, in my opinion, are the evil queen light during the Snow White segment," Navares says.

It takes eight hours to set up all the equipment. Coincidentally, the theme of the show recalls a once little girl who also dared to dream.

"I had always loved Disney, and that was my ultimate dream, was to join the tour," Rahcel Navares recalls. "And now that I'm here, almost four years later, every day is a new adventure, and I couldn't be happier."
