Warming Centers Open Around Area As Extreme Cold Arrives

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Frigid temperatures have moved into the area, but several warming centers are open.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Butler and Lawrence counties until 6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected to fall today in those areas. The heaviest snow will fall during the morning hours before tapering off in the afternoon.

A winter storm watch has also been issued for Friday night into Saturday mornings. The National Weather Service says snow and ice could become a major issue for the area.

Ice accumulations will make driving treacherous and could cause power outages.

Additionally, a Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for western Pennsylvania until 9 a.m. on Friday.

"Fingers go, feet go, that's when you go [home]," advised one worker who had to be out in the frigid elements Thursday.

"Your nose starts to get numb, that's actually the first sign of frostbite, is when your extremities start to get numb," explained Dr. Jonathan Landis with Passavant Hospital.

According to Meteorologist Ron Smiley, wind chills could dip as low as 14 degrees below zero.

As a result, several warming centers have opened around the area.
