Police Investigating Possible Murder-Suicide In Butler And Allegheny Counties

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police in two counties are investigating a troubling murder-suicide that took place in broad daylight, on a busy road, in front of several witnesses.

Around 3:00 p.m., police say the disturbing chain of events began.

That's when 62-year-old Mary Jo Kornick of Freeport left work at Rosebrook Personal Care Home in Sarver. But she had an accident when her car veered from the southbound lane of 356 into the northbound lane and struck a car.

"Multiple witnesses stopped to assist the victim, the actor then arrived at the scene," said Trooper Ronald Kesten of the Pennsylvania State Police.

While those witnesses were trying to help Kornick in the roadway, the unthinkable happened.

"As he arrived at the scene he pulled up next to the victim's vehicle and the cars were parallel and he fired a gunshot that struck the victim," Kesten added.

That actor was 72-year-old Nicholas Domek III of Pittsburgh.

"This is such a tragedy. We are so angry and so hurt," the Kornick Family said. "Mary was a beautiful person inside and out. She'd give the shirt off her back for anyone. We love her and we always will. We are devastated. We would like to thank the persons who were assisting her at the side of the road before the shooting. Trying to piece things together, she was terrified of this man and we feel the justice system failed her miserably."

Although police can't confirm the exact relationship between the two, police say she had filed for a Protection From Abuse Order.

"There was an active PFA that protected Ms. Kornick from the actor," said Kesten.

When police found Domek later at Cavalry Cemetery not far from his home near Greenfield in the city of Pittsburgh, he was dead inside his Red Chevy Cruze of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"There was a .40 caliber gun shell casing located at the scene of the Homicide and at the cemetery," said Kesten.

Kornick was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital.

State police can't confirm if Domek waited and followed Kornick as she left work which was close to where her life was taken today.

But according to the Butler Radio Network Domek also back in December entered the personal care facility where Kornick worked and held a gun to her head.

She fought back and he fled, now tonight a tragedy and many questions remain.
