At Least One Person Dead After Early Morning Fire In Beaver County

BEAVER COUNTY (KDKA) -- Authorities say one person is dead after a house fire in Big Beaver, Beaver County.

Police spent much of the day investigating the home.

"We heard fire trucks and alarms going off. We came out and there was a police car blocking the road," neighbor Sherry Slem said.

The call came into 911 around 6 Sunday morning, and that's when Slem and her husband Butch saw the scene outside. Butch tried to get a better look.

"All the windows are really charred," he said.

According to the Big Beaver Volunteer Fire Chief, the fire started in the bottom floor of a rental home at the intersection of Tuscarora Drive and Shenango Road. By the time crews arrived, the flames were spreading to the second floor and attic. He said the only person in the home was the victim.

One firefighter had to go to the emergency room for a cut to his head. He is okay.

The Slems said it is a group of guys that live in the house, and they've lived there for a year and a half.

"They had the regular kind of things that guys will do like parties there and they had their grill out and they were roasting things," Sherry Slem said.

For most of the day, Beaver Falls police were investigating the home. Our crews could see investigators photographing the house, and a canine unit looking around the property. Their chief was on scene as well.

"We're a quiet country community. Our neighbors have chickens. We're just a country area," Sherry Slem said.

The identity of the victims has not been released. The state police fire marshal is investigating the cause. No word on if this is connected to the Big Beaver homicide.
