Pa. Turnpike Installing Its First Solar Microgrid To Power Hempfield Twp. Facility

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A local Turnpike facility will soon be powered by the sun.

It's going to take a lot of solar panels to do that -- more 3,200 of them in total.

This is the Pa. Turnpike's first big solar project.

The solar array is being installed near a Turnpike maintenance facility in Hempfield.

It will serve as its own microgrid that can sell excess energy back to West Penn Power.
