When you think of Pittsburgh’s food staples, you probably think of a Primanti’s sandwich stacked with cole slaw and fries or pierogis, but Pittsburgh’s also got a great offering of seafood — especially if you’re looking for a great scallop dish. So where to go? From Wholey’s fish market to restaurants specializing in seafood dishes to even sushi, Pittsburgh has plenty of awesome places to turn to for scallops. Here are five of the best.

Grand Concourse
100 Wests Station Square Drive
Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Located in Pittsburgh’s Station Square, the Grand Concourse offers unique ambience as well as great food. The seafood restaurant is house in the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Station. Their scallop dishes include the straightforward pan-seared scallops, a crab-encrusted Dynamite Scallop appetizer and Pasta Pagliara, a pasta dish with scallops, salmon, shrimp, mussels and baby spinach in a white clam sauce. Just keep in mind that the menu does change daily.

Though the Strip District’s Eleven has a seasonal ever-changing menu, be sure to try their scallops — you’ll find them in almost any course. The sea scallop appetizer comes with potato salad and herbs, while the sea scallop entree features polenta, vegetables and focaccia. For a full plate of seafood, try the Seafood Tasting from the dinner menu with not just scallops but halibut, crab cake and veggies. Be sure to pair your meal with one of their wines, as well.

Part of the Big Burrito restaurant group — which also includes Eleven — Kaya offers a slightly different take on their scallops, focusing on the culinary customs of the Caribbean, South America and the Pacific. The award-winning restaurant’s dishes include plenty of seafood, such as a shrimp and scallop ceviche. But the menu changes daily, so be sure to check with the restaurant ahead to see if they’re cooking what you’re craving.

They’ve been in business for over 100 years, and with Luke Wholey’s Wild Alaskan Grille, the family seafood business takes a new direction, serving up a seafood meal not far from where it all started. Scallop fans are sure to love the Baja Shrimp and Day Boat Scallops — two jumbo sea scallops and five jumbo Baja shrimp grilled and served over jasmine rice.

With multiple locations, including the South Side and North Hills, Nakama Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar offers a different take on scallops. Try something different than the ever-popular California roll with their Spicy Hotate, or try the Seared Sea Scallops lettuce wrap, sautéed in a basil-lime coconut cream. Other scallop dishes include sea scallops with teriyaki and peanut sauce. You can also get scallop hibachi dishes, such as the Seafood Favorite with shrimp and tuna, the Imperial Feast, Seafood Combination, Land and Sea served with a strip steak, or Seafood Diablo.
