Free and Affordable Pittsburgh for 5/4: The Love of Kids, Moms and Family

By Rachel Booth

This weekend and the week ahead is all about celebrating kids and moms - whether it's just being a kid, honoring talented kids, or giving mom a much-needed night out on the town. On this week's Free & Affordable Pittsburgh segment on Pittsburgh Today Live, we're talking about a heritage day where kids can learn all about games of years past, an awards reception honoring talented high school students, and National Mom's Night Out. Bonus - of course these are all either free or very reasonably priced. Learn a bit more about each of the things mentioned on this week's show.

Depreciation Lands Museum just north of Pittsburgh strives to preserve and interpret the early years of European settlement in the "Depreciation Lands," which at one time was all of the North Hills of Pittsburgh extending almost all the way to Butler. The State of Pennsylvania set aside the land to pay its Revolutionary War soldiers for their services, since the dollar "depreciated" drastically during the war. This affordable event is a special family oriented day full of hands-on activities from years gone by helping kids reconnect with the "pass times" of past times. This year's focus is on classic games like hopscotch, marbles, skelly, duck duck goose, and more (kids can even churn butter and whip cream)! They'll have baked goods cooking in the log cabin, and the one room schoolhouse will be in-session. The outdoor bake oven will be turning out hot soft pretzels for purchase, and corn bread with homemade maple butter for sampling.  Even the old-fashioned Mercantile will be open, where you can buy a stick of candy or a toy!

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild educates and inspires urban youth through the arts. The MCG Invitational Arts Exhibition is hosting their awards reception this coming Thursday. This inaugural exhibition evolved from their annual 'All City' event, which was originally just for Pittsburgh Public School students. The show now includes talented students in West Mifflin, Duquesne, Wilkinsburg, Homestead and McKeesport - competing for accolades and awards in this juried multimedia arts exhibition with awards exceeding $100,000! Don't think "high school art show." According to MCG, this work is truly stellar - professionally matted, lit and presented, the over 200 pieces on display are "museum and gallery quality." The reception, which includes complimentary hors d'oeuvres and live jazz runs from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m., with the awards ceremony itself following from 7 p.m. until about 8:30 p.m.

Cocktails, shopping and registration for prizes is from 5 p.m. until 6:30, then prizes are awarded and the contests begin! You must be present to win your prize. Prizes will be given away at random, plus three random winners will participate in "Shopped!" In Ross Park Mall's version of Chopped, three winners get a $500 Simon Gift Card and one hour to use their prize in their "pantry," aka their retailers, to create a special outfit including a secret theme and ingredients.
