Pitt Remains No. 5 In AP Top 25

Pittsburgh (KDKA/AP) - This first week of the new year saw 12 of the top 25 teams lose. The top seven teams in the AP Top 25 all won and remained unchanged from the previous week.

Duke still remains the unanimous pick for the top spot followed by Ohio State, Kansas, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, San Diego State and Villanova. UConn was previously ranked 8th but dropped to 10th after a loss to Notre Dame who jumped up in the rankings from 14th to 9th. The Purdue Boilermakers round out the top 10 at No. 8.

With 12 of the top 25 teams losing, that allowed for unranked teams to move into the Top 25. Louisville and Temple jump back into the rankings at No. 18 & 19. No. 20 Wisconsin is in for the first time since last season's final poll, while No. 24 Georgia is ranked for the first time since the final poll of 2002-03.

The Big East has five teams in the top 10 and eight ranked overall, one off its record set in January 2009.

Jamie Dixon and the Pitt Panthers will be playing 3 of the ranked Big East teams in their next five games. On Jan. 12th Pitt will head to No. 22 Georgetown, followed by No. 4 Syracuse and No. 9 Notre Dame at the Petersen Events Center later in the month.
