Some Kids Put To Work On Snow Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Thousands of youngsters throughout the area had a day of fun in the snow after many school districts in the region canceled class because of the weather.

As the snow continued to fall early this morning and local roads only got worse, Gateway School District declared a snow day.

But even though there was not homework, the snow created plenty of work at home.

"When I'm home from school, I usually think I'm [going to] go outside and go sled riding, but it doesn't happen," said Adam Salandro, a local high school student.

Salandro's dad had him clearing the family's driveway at 9 a.m.

"I should be sleeping in," said Salandro of what he would rather be doing.

Elsewhere, other kids were enjoying the new blanket of white snow that fell overnight.

"I can come out and play, and not sit inside and do work," said 9-year-old Belle Chatkin.

She said she was most looking forward to sled riding.

But Fatima Mustafa wanted to stay warm.

"Sitting inside and drinking hot chocolate," she said of her preferred snow day activities.

But with midterms scheduled for today, it wasn't just a snow day as Mother Nature ended up giving Salandro a reprieve.

"That was the big thing in school, everyone was talking about it," he added.

He was looking forward to some sledding and football with friends later in the day.
