Punxsutawney Phil Calls For An Early Spring

PUNXSUTAWNEY (KDKA/AP) – Today is Groundhog Day, which means only one thing. Would Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow or not?

As it turns out, Pennsylvania's famous prognosticating groundhog is calling for an early spring.

Thousands of people gathered at Gobbler's Knob for the annual event. They all gave Phil two thunderous ovations.

Members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle read Phil's prediction.

Before he addressed the matter of the day, Phil showed his support for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

His prediction said, "After casting an inquisitive eye toward thousands of his faithful followers, he proclaimed, 'The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl!'"

As everyone cheered, several people began waving Terrible Towels. Their joy was only further enhanced by Phil not seeing his shadow.

According to the Associated Press, this is the 125th prediction for Phil. Since 1887, he has seen his shadow 98 times and hasn't seen it 16 times.

There are no records for the remaining years, though the group has never failed to issue a forecast.
