Punxsutawney Phil Calls For An Early Spring

PUNXSUTAWNEY (KDKA/AP) – Today is Groundhog Day, which means only one thing. Would Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow or not?

As it turns out, Pennsylvania’s famous prognosticating groundhog is calling for an early spring.

Thousands of people gathered at Gobbler’s Knob for the annual event. They all gave Phil two thunderous ovations.

Members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle read Phil’s prediction.

Before he addressed the matter of the day, Phil showed his support for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

His prediction said, “After casting an inquisitive eye toward thousands of his faithful followers, he proclaimed, ‘The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl!’”

As everyone cheered, several people began waving Terrible Towels. Their joy was only further enhanced by Phil not seeing his shadow.

According to the Associated Press, this is the 125th prediction for Phil. Since 1887, he has seen his shadow 98 times and hasn’t seen it 16 times.

There are no records for the remaining years, though the group has never failed to issue a forecast.

It doesn’t matter if he see his shadow or not….It six weeks to spring anyway.

Thanks. Groundhogs Day is for fun, by the way.

Agreed! It is all about tradition and people getting together to celebrate and have fun! : )

    1. Blondie says:

They must of really been bored during a long cold winter to come up with this idea. LOL

  4. C T Griffith says:

98 plus 16 equals 114? this is his 125th prediction…..what did he do the other 11 times, just curious….something does not add up here…..did he not come out of his warm burrow…….just curious….it is early in the morning , but the numbers just did not add up, smile

    1. Ringo says:

Some of the earliest appearances, the records have been lost or were never kept in the first place. He didn’t make a prediction in 1943 due to the war.

      1. ALL answers says:

Incorrect Ringo…in 1943 phil predicted that in the years 2008 -2012 we would have a IDIOT for a president and then our country would be doomed…Again he was right!

      2. Blondie says:

WOW He is an old groundhog. Doesn’t look likehe has aged a bit! LOL

    2. Blondie says:

They either couldn’t find his hole due to too much snow to pull him out or he refused to come out.

Read the article again. It says “There are no records for the remaining years, though the group has never failed to issue a forecast”. So, they are saying thar even though they have held the event every year, since 1887, some of the records have gotten lost. It’s understandable.

    4. Mona says:

They state at the end of the article that they don’t have the predictions from the previous years.

    1. Phil Conners says:

Didn’t we do this same thing yesterday ?

  7. Blondie says:

I don’t think it was meant as a racist comment. Idiots come in all colors.

  8. Ryan says:

Nobody said anything racist…in fact, I’m willing to bet “COME CORRECT” has called G.W. Bush an idiot at some point in his life.

  9. Mrs. P Phil says:

Groundhogs day is just a time for fun and celebration! Just have a good time with it. You can’t get the full effect unless you have went to Gobbler’s Knob! It’s a good time! So don’t take it so serious….just have fun celebrating!

  10. FRIENDS OF PHIL says:

first of all everone does have to lighten up this is a fun family event. there is entertainment, plenty of hot chocolate, and fire works just before it gets light out. the fire works are breath-taking at that time of the day, better than at ight. our family has left our home at 2am to ge to the knob to see phil several years. we love phil no matter what his prediction HOW MANY OF YOU CAN SAY “I HAVE BEEN THERE” its cold but alot of fun p.s. my daughter is handicap and there are great accomidations forn that too!

    1. Mrs. P Phil says:

EXACTLY!! Like I said ^^^^, unless you have been to the Knob you have no idea! It is such a great time and I agree that the Fireworks are better at that time of the morn than at night!! We too go up every year, except this year, at 2am! I just can’t understand why people have to make a big deal about it. If you don’t like it or believe in it that’s fine, but other people do so keep your comments to yourself bc they are not necessary!

  11. pittgirl says:

You people are too funny! lol

  12. George Miller says:

Hey, here is ideal. If we don’t start seeing an early spring, we are going to replace Phil with Gus.

  13. J G Simpson says:

So if seeing his shadow means 6 more weeks of winter and that would take us to mid march , when is an early spring 3 weeks? 4 weeks ? what?

  14. Tim says:

I was watching…. KDKA went to a commercial right when they started reading the proclamation. What a bunch of money hogs. They show more commercials during a Steeler game than any other network.

    1. Chris says:

Im not from the area but my dad spent decades in the tv business (never worked for a cbs affiliate though). However, all networks are the same, and what happens is called a “hard break” where the computers take over and start the break

  15. Gary says:

Gobblers knob? Really? Not one comment about that? You managed to bring politics and race into this? But, not a single ” you can gobble my knob”? I’m shocked. I really expected more from you.

  16. will g says:

don’t groundhogs bite. i wouldn’t stick my fingers that close to his mouth
