Oldies Find New Life On North Versailles Radio Station

NORTH VERSAILLES (KDKA) – WKFB 770 AM in North Versailles is the little station that could and did.

DJ Frankie Day, 70, remembers the oldies when they were new and so do his listeners. The 750-watt station took second place in an online poll of 120 AM oldies stations nationwide.

"We have touched so many hearts," Day said. "They came through for us by voting and that's the only way you could win. You needed to get the listener to vote."

Frank Dittig retired as president of the office supplies and furniture store he founded in North Versailles, passing the ownership to his children. Now his grandchildren listen to the music he grew up with.

For 55 hours, six days a week, the energetic DJ is working harder than ever and loving every minute, but it's not on vinyl anymore.

"My wife decided it would be much easier to concentrate and do a much better job with the CDs," he explained.

The station has 60,000 oldies from ballads to doo-wop.

"We have molded a fine audience of true oldies lovers and there's nobody who loves their oldies than our generation," he said. "It is without a doubt the greatest music ever recorded."
