Local Verizon Customers Excited To Get iPhone

By: Heather Abraham

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — It’s the day so many Verizon customers have been waiting for as the iPhone has finally arrived.

Several people braved the bitter cold temperatures overnight and lined up outside the Verizon store in Cranberry Township before the sun even came up.

“I was here for five hours before anybody else showed up,” said Verizon customer Jim Bilka.

Bilka said he got to the store at 11 p.m. Wednesday; and dressed head to toe for the Arctic Tundra, he waited to be the first to get the iPhone.

He said it’s a birthday gift for his son.

“One for me and one for him, but I promised him the first one for his 18th birthday,” said Bilka. “He really better appreciate this phone! I’m thinking ‘Dad of the Year’ award.”

Laura Merritt, of Verizon, says this has been a long time coming and the anticipation is drawing plenty of people in.

“We’ve seen people camping outside the stores in tents; we’ve seen them in lawn chairs. We’ve been leading up to this with the rumors that have been flying around for several years,” said Merritt. “So, we are here finally today and very excited about it.”

Little Mackenzie and her family also came out early for the new phone.

“She just wouldn’t go back to sleep. So we decided why not go get the iPhone,” said Abby Clark, another Verizon customer.

“Luckily, we got in the second rotation of lines getting in so we didn’t have to wait in the cold too long,” said Strealy Clark.

The cold weather and late start to school meant that 12-year-old Joseph could finally get his phone, too.

“He’s had to wait. His birthday was in January so he’s been counting down the days,” said Laurie Olivia, Joseph’s mom.

Verizon began shipping the phones to customers who ordered online earlier in the week.

The iPhone 4 on Verizon runs for the same price as AT&T, either $199 or $299.

I ordered two iphones on the 4th which were due to arrive this Monday, which were stolen from the pittsburgh fedex hub sometime between Saturday and Tuesday (and activated mind you) I am not enjoying my iPhone at the moment.

what is this thing called an i-phone??

Verizon is a rip off. I got tired of extra charges and horrible customer service. T-mobile is cheaper and service is great. Having an iPhone on Verizon’s network is going to suck.Buy an iPhone a real iPhone. Not a modified for CDMA( Verizons out of date system) unlock it and use it on a much cheaper and less bogged down network. (t-mobile)

You Verizon folks are like 5 years too late. Those of us that have the IPHONE on a superior data network are look at you like fools. Verizon is going to slow down your already slow network. Yes I will agree you guys don’t drop as many calls as AT&T however if you are in a city, this rarely happens. Besides who cares about dropped calls, I care about how fast I can watch youtube videos, surf the net, email etc.

NOT TO MENTION you won’t be able to make a phone call and surf the net at the same time.

    Verizon is a JOKE.

  • gggggggggggg

You tell em Justin. When you have no service to dial 911 on ur AT-T I-phone and if you had Verizon you would have had service when you really needed it instead of you tube.

so get this people the iphone was cool like five years ago when it first came out. we have android now much better Os. and even tho verizon has a way better calling network than att yinz that pay those ridiculous bills are crazy plus think about it you could get an android phone with more capabilities than an iphone on the sprint network with UNLIMITED data for at least forty dollars less a month than any of the other carriers plans. check it out

Nice comment Lizz. But, the adults are talking! Sprint is just as out dated as Verizon. CDMA is done. In fact Sprint and Verizon are the last two providers to use it. World wide! You do make a good point about Android OS. But, the Sheeple want an iPhone.
