Pittsburgh To Host National Veterans Wheelchair Games

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pittsburgh will play host to the 31st Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games this summer.

Hundreds of vets from around the world are expected to attend.

Steelers President Art Rooney II and former Steeler Rocky Bleier, a Purple Heart recipient, will be honorary co-chairs.

Organizers for the games held a “Breakfast of Champions” at the Rivers Club to showcase some of the local guys who plan to compete.

“They compete in 17 different sporting events from water events, to sprints, to air rifles, to rugby–each and every one of them has a story and each one of those stories is that they have moved forward, not allowed disability to hold them back,” Bleier said.

But the event needs volunteers and money.

“We still need to raise about another $100,000 to host the kind of games that we’d like to give our veterans here in Pittsburgh,” Dr. Rory Cooper, a competitor, said.

The games take place the first week of August.

This is one of the few events I actually do volunteer work for. TRUE heroes are hard to come by in this day and age.

Lets see if these HEROS can Draw as many fans as the overpaid athletes. Maybe they can get some people to tailgate in the parking lots. I plan on being there and volunteering my time. Better yet, Why doesn’t the Pittsburgh professional athletes volunteer or donate money to come up with the 100,000 dolars needed to get these games here.

It’s not about drawing fans or tailgate in the parking lot, it’s about the sports and the commeradrie. Don’t get me wrong, we would like to see as many folks in the stands as they can hold. The games are free to the public and we would like to see Pittsburgh fill them. Pittsburgh did a great job supporting the NVWG athletes in 1998 and I know they will do it even better this time. Thank you for volunteering, that makes you our HERO. I competed at the first games in Pittsburgh and I can’t wait to do it again. L.Binger – athlete NVWG – from Delaware. See you at the games.

The New Heights Electric Elevating Manual Wheelchair, and the New Heights Electric Elevating Power Wheelchairs, available exclusively from Bromac Assistive Technology, were developed to resolve the single greatest problem encountered by all wheelchair users, which is that of being stuck at one level, and not being able to access things in a world that was designed for people who could stand.

These wheelchairs are designed as general purpose utility wheelchairs, to be used in, and for, your day to day living and transportation. With them, you can go anyplace and do anything that you can with any standard conventional wheelchair, however, these wheelchairs will also change your life. These wheelchairs are designed to easily, and temporarily elevate you, at the push of a button, from a standard seated height, to a height greater than that of a person standing, or any height in between. They will do this safely and securely, while remaining within the same size and performance constraints as any standard conventional wheelchair.

Now, for a cost that is far less than that of properly adapting your home to a conventional wheelchair, you can have a wheelchair which will completely adapt you to any home, as well as provide the same easy access to everything outside of your home as well. With these wheelchairs you can access the highest shelves in any store or kitchen cabinet, you can come up to the height of any counter or workbench and work comfortably. You can now have conversations with people at eye level instead of constantly having to look up at them, and these are only a few of the many new things the New Heights wheelchairs will enable you to do.

These wheelchairs will enable you to function independently in virtually any environment, and will give you the freedom to do what you want to do, without the need for assistance from other people.
