Look Up To See “SuperMoon” On Saturday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — You might notice the full moon over Pittsburgh looking a little brighter than usual this weekend.

Astronomers say what you’re seeing is a “SuperMoon.” When the moon rises on Saturday night, it will be brighter and closer to Earth than it has been in 18 years.

Some believe when the moon is full and this close to Earth there will be natural disasters, more crime and full emergency rooms.

“Despite a lot of people saying that full moon things get busier, we see a lot more criminal and crime and violence, it really hasn’t been proven scientifically,” Dr. Tom Campbell at Allegheny General Hospital said.

Amy Mokricky, the owner of Moonstones, a mystical haven, weighed in on the legend.

“The moon definitely rules the ebb and flow of the tides of the earth, as does it control the ebb and flow of the tides of the emotions of humans,” she said.

So what about natural disasters?

“The only time it’s going to affect a storm is if a storm is there,” she said.

It’s pretty and silvery, but I can’t say it’s any more special than any other full moon.
